Dr. Bernhard Ernst

Dr. Bernhard Ernst is an electrical engineer with experience in a variety of power systems obtained during 19 years of experience working in research, with a TSO and a solar inverter manufacturer. Furthermore, he is chairing the IEC technical committee SC8A “Grid Integration of Large- capacity Renewable Energy (RE) Generation”. IEC SC8A works on standards to increase the grid stability and security of supply in electric power systems with a high share of variable renewable generation.

After completing his doctorate in the field of wind power forecasting, Dr. Ernst joined RWE Transportnetz Strom (now Amprion GmbH) as an expert for the grid integration of renewable energy. He spent a large portion of his time as a project leader on the new task congestion management on the French-German and Swiss-German borders as well as in the CWE market coupling project. In parallel to the congestion management projects he was the project leader on Amprion’s side for the joint project with EEX on the German intraday trading platform.

In 2011 Dr. Ernst joint SMA, the world largest manufacturer for solar PV inverters at this time, as Director of Grid Integration. His tasks included the coordination of grid integration activities within SMA such as research projects, and development of new features and activities in standardisation.

In May 2015 he left SMA to start his own business as a consultant in the energy sector. His assignments so far include the market and grid integration of distributed energy sources such as wind and solar PV in Southern Africa.

In September 2016 he started at Fraunhofer IWES (now Fraunhofer IEE) as manager of the group grid planning and operation. Beside this he still runs his consulting business on a limited base.

Dr. Bernhard Ernst is manager of the group Studies Grid Planning and Operation at Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology (IWES).

Prior to this he was the director of the department Grid Integration at SMA Solar Technology AG, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of PV power converters. He holds a degree of electrical engineering of the University of Kassel, Germany. In 2003 he finished his Ph.D. (Dr. Ing.) on the topic of wind power forecasting at the “InstitutfürSolareEnergieversorgungstechnik” (now Fraunhofer IWES) in Kassel.

In 2004 he started his career at RWE TSO with main focus on wind power integration and congestion management. Dr. Ernst is chairman of the IEC SC 8A “Grid Integration of Large-capacity Renewable Energy (RE) Generation” and has published several papers about grid integration of renewable energy source and forecasting systems on international conferences and workshops.

Over the past 15 years Dr. Ernst was periodically teaching at several international institutions in the field of and forecasting and grid integration of renewables.
