Kannan is the Technology Leader – Electrical Technologies & Systems at GE Global Research, Bangalore. Based out of GE’s largest multidisciplinary R&D facility, the John F. Welch Technology Centre, he is responsible for driving technology development in the areas of controls, optics and instrumentation, electrical power systems, power electronics, safety and electromagnetics.
He has been with GE since 2001, holding various leadership positions within the research organization, GE Global Research. In his first role, he developed and managed a team of technologists doing research in the areas of Power Electronics, Power Systems and Energy Storage. In 2009, he moved to Niskayuna, New York, as the Power Systems Platform Leader, responsible for overseeing all Smart Grid research activities across GE Global Research. He moved back to Bangalore and took on his current role in August 2012.
Kannan obtained his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Tulane University in 1996. Prior to GE, he worked with Entergy Services Inc., one of the largest electric power utilities in the US, where he was responsible for bringing new technologies to the transmission system, performing technical studies and recommending solutions.
He is the immediate past Chair of the IEEE – Power and Energy Society, Bangalore Chapter.
